The Little White House

The Little White House

We have been studying World War II and decided to visit FDR’s Little White House in Warm Springs, GA.  We don’t agree with his political vision or most of his “accomplishments”, but he certainly showed a lot of perseverance for a man with polio.

Happy Birthday Rebekah!

Happy Birthday Rebekah!

For her birthday, Rebekah wanted Noah to kill one of our roosters to have chicken and dumplings. We chose our mean rooster. Noah killed it that morning and we ate it for supper. Instead of having chicken and dumplings, we had “rooster and dumplings.”

For lunch we had a tea party for Rebekah. Our Grandmother joined us for the occasion.

Trip to Polyface Farm

9:54 pm on Tuesday, October 11, 2005

Today we left Lora Lynn and Andrew’s house and headed home. We went a different route than we normally do which took us through the Shenandoah Valley. Recently, we had borrowed a book from Mr. Morton by a farmer, Mr. Joel Salatin, who makes a living practicing some unconventional, yet practical, farming methods. His farm, called Polyface, is in the Shenandoah Valley and, since he extends an open invitation to anyone who wants to see it, we had decided to stop by and see it.
As we got closer to arriving we were glad that we had gotten detailed directions from Mr. Salatin, because we would have never found it on our own with all the small, rural twisting roads. By the time we almost had gotten to his farm the road was one lane and even went through someone’s barnyard at one point.

Driving down the rural Virginia roads.

When we arrived we Mr. Salatin pointed out where some of the different operations were and told us we were free to roam around. “No locked doors here!” he said. Since Polyface is a for-profit farm Mr. Salatin and his family can’t take time out to give every person who comes a personal tour or they would never get anything done.

We decided just to look at the operations around the front of the farm, the entire farm consisting of over 500 acres, being 2 miles across at some points. Some of the things we saw were:

The portable Feather Net; two hoophouses on skids encircled with electric netting housing several hundred layers,

The Racken House; containing rabbits and laying hens,

The Eggmobile; a trailer coop from which layers can forage on pasture,

the Gobbledy Go; a version of the Feathered Net for turkeys,

and Mr. Salatin’s famous Pastured Broilers.

The Pastured Broiler model is where chickens are raised in floorless pens so they can be moved to fresh pasture everyday in order to get more forage in their diet. This makes them taste better, and the chickens are happier and healthier.

Playing together in Virginia

9:44 pm on Monday, October 10, 2005

This is a blog entry from Monday Oct. 10 when we were at Lora Lynn’s in Virginia. Today we were going to leave in the morning and go on to the polyface farm, that Noah had been reading about in a book, but we decided to stay and leave on Tuesday. Today was a beautiful day to play outside; and that’s just what we did. We played tag, freeze-tag, and capture-the-flag together and others played some other games outside. The guys played with air-soft guns, and everyone worked on their speech for speech class on Wednesday. We wanted to play capture the flag in the dark with light-sticks as the flags and boundaries but having none the guys went on a trip to Walmart to get some(and another air-soft gun L.O.L.). That night, after a game of night-capture-the-flag, we had ice cream and watched an Andy Griffith.

Friday at the Fanning’s

9:34 pm on Friday, October 7, 2005

This past weekend we went to Lora Lynn’s house for a surprise visit.  We got there around  9:00 in the morning. We came in and
surprised  Lora Lynn. She was so happy!  That day mommy and daddy took naps and Abbi showed Lora Lynn some of her
picture’s. Lora Lynn brought some of us to her grocery store. It was really fun!  That night we had BBQ for supper. It was really
good.  Andrew had a table top soccer game down in the basement.   That night people took turns playing each other then every body
went to bed.

The twins loved their bottles.
