The Expert Knows and Shows

2:20 pm on Wednesday, January 30, 2008

At the end of December, we had some friends in town who camped out a few days at our house. Josh went out hunting a couple of the mornings and on their last day, he got two deer! So we all got to go out and watch the whole process. Really neat!

Snuggled up in the back of the Dean’s car. LOL!

Kind of suspicious, don’t you think? Jennifer was a very sweet wife and cleaned it all up for her hubby.

Jennifer and Maggie.

As you can see, we got dogs from all around coming for the “show”.

Primitive transportation.

Eager onlookers.

Beginning to pull the hide off.

“Here Gibbie. Want a fuzzy deer tail?”

Ripping the hide off .

Erin’s not quite sure about her Daddy’s hobby.

Makes a great punching bag.

Snapping the bone in two.

Taking the pieces apart.

Josh practices milking the second deer. (Notice the stream of milk)

Want to try a little? Molly did.

Look at the size of that stomach! The deer’s that is.

The finished product.

Everyone thought it was funny that I took pictures of deer being gutted that morning, then went and photographed a wedding that afternoon. Lots of  fun and adventure!

Thanks for the experience, Josh! From all the Sanders Fam

Happy Birthday, Mr. Ernest!

9:55 pm on Monday, January 21, 2008

Isn’t it nice of them to declare a National Holiday for your birthday? J I knew you always had a way with people.
Hope you have a great day! ~ Rebekah, for the Family

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done,
  But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
  Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
  On his face.  If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
  That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
  At least no one ever has done it”;
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
  And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
  Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
  That couldn’t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
  There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
  The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
  Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
  That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

‘Tis So Interesting…

4:05 pm on Monday, January 21, 2008

…you say,
 A look into our day!
Various pictures in no order,
I wasn’t the greatest sorter,
Though typically boring to most,
I treasure them with great boast;
For what they portray,
Is my lovely fami-lay.

Grammy shelling pecans.

Absorbing it all in.

Gibbie and Grammy.

Checking emails.

Our Greenhouse which will soon be getting a lot of use.

Outdoor activities.

Noah’s, chicken’s, eggs. (We’ve had to stop saying “Noah’s eggs” because that just doesn’t sound right. LOL!)

Coloring.

“Howdy ma’am.”

Late night discussions, foot rubs and episodes of P&P. Oh, and don’t forget the Symphony bars!

SNOW in the South!

9:56 pm on Saturday, January 19, 2008

“Hey y’all, it’s snowing!” as the front door is slung open and little people start running out. Gabriel and Nehemiah had never seen it before and Eman was just a month old (7 years ago) when we last got a day of snow. So we just thought they were over exaggerating in their excitement.

In which we troop out into the half sleet half frozen rain, weather.

The snowflakes were really big and so pretty as they came down.

Grace decides to catch and save some mementos of the day.

“Look, it’s beginning to stick!”

Our tender-footed southern chickens.

“The man from snowy weather”

Comin’ down fast.

Eman and Ethan.

A white blanket covering up the splatters of red clay.

The Gibbie.

Biking in the snow.

The video lady sits on the front porch takin’ it all in.

Our 11 Acre wonderland.

Southern snowshoes.

Poor broccoli, it must be in total shock. LOL!

Bekah reaches to disturb the untouched whiteness, but for a good cause!

A dual.

“Now I’ve fallen prey to their cunning play!”

A victim.

Gorgeous scenery.

Cold hands.

Now what are they up to?

Careful, careful…for once a place is touched, there isn’t much snow left to speak of.

Snow angels in the making.

Lovely, just lovely.

You can tell that we aren’t prepared for snowy winters by just looking at Eman’s gloves. LOL! One is a gardening glove.

Fore!

Romping around.

Grace sliding down a hill on the campaign sign we used as make-shift sleds. LOL!

Noah got some speed there.

Down goes Bekah.

Later we went down in the woods and tried the big hills and pretty much wore it down to the dirt.

Gibster a flyin’!

Yep, soaked to the bone, but havin’ a delightful time.

Some friends called who live in town and said they got only flurries. Yet, they said the library closed early because of the possible chance of “snow”. LOL! Grammy just lightheartedly laughed at us “southerners”.

Have a great weekend, y’all!

Birthday Battles

1:13 pm on Friday, January 18, 2008

For Ethan’s birthday yesterday, Grandmother, Granddaddy and Uncle Brooke came down for the afternoon. As the pictures will reveal, it proved to be an exciting time.

Ethan with his new coveralls-prepared for anything like….

….nerf gun wars!

Noah cautiously advances around the corner.

Straight on shot. (Notice the bullet by Uncle Brooke’s head.)

Take cover!!

Little man hiding.

Showdown.

These columns didn’t provide the best of cover.

When out of breath, play a game.

Strategy.

Whilst the battle rages all around and bullets are whizzing overhead, Grammy calmly continues picking the chicken for supper.

Rules of engagement: You’re “dead” until the person who shot you, cocks their gun.

Gotcha!

The confusion of battle.

Watch out, Grandmother!

Enjoying it all.

Happy 10th Birthday….

….Master Ethan! What joy and delight you bring to our family. We love you!

Psalm 89

 maskil of Ethan the Ezrahite.

  I will sing of the LORD’s great love forever;
     with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations.
 I will declare that your love stands firm forever,
     that you established your faithfulness in heaven itself.

 You said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one,
     I have sworn to David my servant,
 ’I will establish your line forever
     and make your throne firm through all generations.’” Selah
 The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD,
     your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones.
 For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD?
     Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings?
 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared;
     he is more awesome than all who surround him.
 O LORD God Almighty, who is like you?
     You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

 You rule over the surging sea;
     when its waves mount up, you still them.
 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain;
     with your strong arm you scattered your enemies.
 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth;
     you founded the world and all that is in it.
 You created the north and the south;
     Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name.
 Your arm is endued with power;
     your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.

 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
     love and faithfulness go before you.
 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you,
     who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD.
 They rejoice in your name all day long;
     they exult in your righteousness.
 For you are their glory and strength,
     and by your favor you exalt our horn.
 Indeed, our shield belongs to the LORD,
     our king to the Holy One of Israel.

 Once you spoke in a vision,
     to your faithful people you said:
“I have bestowed strength on a warrior;
     I have exalted a young man from among the people.
 I have found David my servant;
     with my sacred oil I have anointed him.
 My hand will sustain him;
     surely my arm will strengthen him.
 No enemy will subject him to tribute;
     no wicked man will oppress him.
 I will crush his foes before him
     and strike down his adversaries.
 My faithful love will be with him,
     and through my name his horn will be exalted.
 I will set his hand over the sea,
     his right hand over the rivers.
 He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father,
     my God, the Rock my Savior.’
 I will also appoint him my firstborn,
     the most exalted of the kings of the earth.
 I will maintain my love to him forever,
     and my covenant with him will never fail.
 I will establish his line forever,
     his throne as long as the heavens endure.

 ”If his sons forsake my law
     and do not follow my statutes,
 if they violate my decrees
     and fail to keep my commands,
 I will punish their sin with the rod,
     their iniquity with flogging;
 but I will not take my love from him,
     nor will I ever betray my faithfulness.
 I will not violate my covenant
     or alter what my lips have uttered.
 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness–
     and I will not lie to David–
 that his line will continue forever
     and his throne endure before me like the sun;
 it will be established forever like the moon,
     the faithful witness in the sky.” Selah
 But you have rejected, you have spurned,
     you have been very angry with your anointed one.
 You have renounced the covenant with your servant
     and have defiled his crown in the dust.
 You have broken through all his walls
     and reduced his strongholds to ruins.
 All who pass by have plundered him;
     he has become the scorn of his neighbors.
 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
     you have made all his enemies rejoice.
 You have turned back the edge of his sword
     and have not supported him in battle.
 You have put an end to his splendor
     and cast his throne to the ground.
 You have cut short the days of his youth;
     you have covered him with a mantle of shame. Selah
 How long, O LORD? Will you hide yourself forever?
     How long will your wrath burn like fire?
 Remember how fleeting is my life.
     For what futility you have created all men!
 What man can live and not see death,
     or save himself from the power of the grave ? Selah
 O Lord, where is your former great love,
     which in your faithfulness you swore to David?
 Remember, Lord, how your servant has been mocked,
     how I bear in my heart the taunts of all the nations,
 the taunts with which your enemies have mocked, O LORD,
     with which they have mocked every step of your anointed one.

 Praise be to the LORD forever!
     Amen and Amen.

Sunday Afternoon Stroll

2:26 pm on Wednesday, January 16, 2008

I realized that there had been no recent posts of updates from the property. This past Sunday afternoon we went to go walk around and show it to Grammy and Aunt Anita. Lora Lynn and her family also met us there. Such a gorgeous day. Daddy showed us the doors they had just put up in the shop and then we walked down to see how much the pond water had risen.

Daddy with Ellen and Grammy walk down to the pond.

The view when you first reach the bottom of the hill.

Running down to the water line.

The dock.

Can you believe Ellen is almost one? Such a cutie!

Love the jacket!

Noah’s possible homesite.

Family discussions.

Makin’ our way along.

Walking out on the dam.

Momma and Lora Lynn chattin’.

Daddy and Andrew trying to figure out the depth of the water.

Doesn’t the grass look so nice?

The pond level as of Sunday.

The treehouse is slowly being surrounded.

Adam-dirt man.

“I will make you lie down in green pastures.”

God bless your week.

Me and My Camera

11:11 am on Tuesday, January 15, 2008

When you see an old pretty window with the sunlight streaming through, what do you think of…..right, a perfect opportunity to practice photography skills! So I grabbed my able-bodied siblings for subjects and started shooting away. LOL! I was experimenting in manual mode.

Here are some of the results I got from Gabriel:

I couldn’t decide if I liked some of them better in color or not. What do you think?

Noodlin’

7:25 am on Tuesday, January 15, 2008

How much fun it is to work in the kitchen making noodles with two sets of sisters. Grammy and her sister, Aunt Anita and then Rebekah, Grace and me. There were lots of laughs, but also batches and batches of noodles were being cranked out at the same time. This time we tried out our Durum wheat with the noodles. When ground up it resembles fine cornmeal. The noodles turned out with a little different texture, but the taste was the same (we taste tested with a big pot of chicken and noodles over mashed potatoes for supper). Since they weren’t drying as fast in the winter, we put them in our dehydrators overnight before stocking the freezer.

Gettin’ started.

At first Grammy experimented with the recipe until it was just right. Usually the first batch is a little too dry, so you add more liquid. And then we found that warm tap water makes all the difference opposed to cold. Just trial and error until it feels right!

Egg and water mixture.

Getting ready to mix.

Grammy workin’ hard.

One trick is to slowly add the flour as you are kneading it, not all at once. We tried both methods and using the same amount of flour, the results were totally different. One was soft and squishy and the other hard and dense.

Bekah, Grace and I rotated “stations” so we could learn the different steps.

Making sure it is not too sticky.

Aunt Anita cuts the dough into segments.

“Hey, what are you girls doin’?” Sorry bud, no sweets this time!

Rollin’ it out flat. Aunt Anita was telling us about a lady they knew when they were little girls who rolled out her dough by hand and cut the noodles with a knife. She said that what she remembers so well was that the lady would always cut her noodles so thin and perfect-with a knife! She and Grammy could never imitate her.

Starting to look like something.

Noodles Galore!

Bloopers:

Don’t ask what we’re doing-I don’t even know!

Sisters…..together…..in a kitchen. Oh, no!

The noodle makin’ crew.

Dec. Review: Christmas Day

6:49 am on Thursday, January 10, 2008

We spent Christmas day at Grandmother and Granddaddy’s. Grammy, her sister Aunt Anita and Daddy’s sister Aunt Toody were able to come with us also. It is always such a joy to be in a full house with family! Lora Lynn and her family also made the effort to be with everybody! Very relaxing time to visit, play euchre or sit by the crackling fire. Thanks for opening your home to everyone, Grandmother and Granddaddy.

Daddy starts the day off with the reading of the Christmas story.

Meditating….
