Not Your Typical Thanksgiving Post

5:23 pm on Wednesday, November 25, 2009

But then who said we ever did anything “typical”. J

So you’ve heard about the many broilers we’ve raised and sold this fall. We still have one more batch of a hundred to process the first of December, but here are some pictures from one morning we processed earlier this month:

Scarf weather.

Waiting on the scald water to heat.

Sorry y’all, I couldn’t resist.

Joel F. and Gibbie getting ready to….

….build a fire for us. We’ve found that the smoke helps mask other smells.

It’s tradition to save the runt for last. Scrawny ain’t he (or she, pardon me).

Daddy worked on running water lines that morning.

LOL!

Ethan and Joel take out one of the turkeys from the cage they put it in the night before. He was the grand finale for the day.

Gabriel’s been faithful in raising his three turkeys as an experiment for larger operations later on. As you’ve seen in previous posts, the turkeys act more like pets and Gabriel has loved raising them. In the above pictures he was telling it good-bye. It wasn’t a tearful or sorrowful good-bye, just very matter of fact. Everyone kept telling us that we would never get to taste the meat from these turkey’s because they were such pets. But Gabriel always knew why he was raising them and just had fun while doing it. He named them “Happy”, “Thanks” & “Giving”. LOL!

It was too big to put in the killin’ cones, so they put it in a feed sack.

The rigged up contraption.

Getting it out of the sack after it was dead.

Gabriel was so proud to provide food for the table!

The boys wanted to gather the wing feathers before it was put in the plucker.

Our new processing facility.

Watching Noah as he’s struggling…

…..to scald the monster. It weighed probably 30lbs dressed! Yep, next time we raise some we won’t let them get that big.

We’d never tried a turkey in our plucker before. It needed a little help every once in a while, but it was better than hand plucking!

The “Chicken Crew”. Grace conveniently decided she had lots of pies she needed to make that morning plus lotsa housework. So she was waaaayyyy too busy to help disassemble chickens. J

That things in our freezer now.

Sorry for not being able to post much recently y’all. I could give you all a mile long list of what’s been occupying my time otherwise, but if I had that much time then you’d be seeing more posts. J Life’s just been extremely busy recently with deadlines on the house, etc… So don’t assume that just because there aren’t posts that we’re not doing much. Yep, my hard drive is loaded with tons of pictures to share with y’all. Someday…..when I’m sitting on the porch drinking lemonade and watching sunsets.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving y’all! Treasure your time spent with loved ones………

October Overview

8:06 am on Tuesday, November 17, 2009

I’m really rushed today, but here are all the pictures that go with this post.

Rebekah’s surprise birthday party with Momma’s side of the family.

Boys gathered ’round the dessert table.

Cousins……..

One day we went up to North Georgia to pick up apples.

Live beehive observation.

We got back home on Thursday and then that evening family came in town for an event.

Uncle Jon and the boys.

Challenge version of Euchre.

5 challenge pushups for every point the other team got.

Rafter viewing.

Caleb.

Guys and ropes…..

Hmmm……

This was when Noah was finishing up the wiring for the upstairs before…….

…….the spray foam insulation.

The sewing room.

Worshipping on Sunday morning with Alan and Katie & Co.

Tuning…..

And now……………….for the answer to this post. Here is our walk-in cooler for the farm. Daddy found this site where a guy invented a way to use a regular window a/c unit to cool a room down to the mid 30′s F.

This hole is for the window unit. Unfortunately we didn’t decide to do the cooler until after the walls had already been poured. Have any of you ever built a walk in cooler? We are looking forward to having one, large fridge to replace our aged, power sucking old refrigerator collection.

Chicken Processing pictures coming up next………..

Catching Up with Long-Time Friends

2:32 pm on Thursday, November 12, 2009

Yesterday our family, plus LL and her gang, took a last minute 3 hour road trip to see some friends of ours. The Barlows were finishing up their fall tour and this was the closest they were gonna be for a while. Daddy got in touch with Mr. Vince to see what their schedule was. They had some time to visit around 1:00pm. We had a wonderful time catching up and encouraging one another, but the only sad part was that Noah was gone to a fiddle camp this weekend, so he wasn’t able to come with us.

Listening to sound check when we arrived. Aren’t they cuties?

Outdoor stage.

“Bill-ba”

Overcast day.

Notice that jogger in the background? Many people from the other bands were trying to run up and down the stairs 25 times.

After sound check we all went to hang out for a bit.

Mrs. MaryAnn and LL.

Daddy and Mr. Vince have know each other since before either of them were married.

Lyssa getting out her Mac to show us recent pictures of their nieces and nephews.

Off in another corner, another laptop comes in handy keeping the children occupied and from crawling up the walls.

Cutie and she knows it.

Cramming in lots of talking in a small amount of time.

Alyssa and me talking photography.

Becca signing the electric guitars for the silent auction to raise money for Mercy Ministries.

Group shots.

So much to catch up on. No matter how many years it’s been since they’ve last seen each other, these two have always been able to just start their conversation back up where they left off.

Chillin’……

Momma and Mrs. MaryAnn. Mrs. MaryAnn has always been such a wonderful hostess!

Resorting to drastic measures to get the energy out of the kids.

Later in the evening the girls went to the bus and got ready while the rest of us went up to help finish setting up the tables.

Yep, outdoor show and it’s raining. J

Grace folding shirts.

Sorry, but I didn’t take any pictures from the rest of the evening. It would have been a great shot though, if I taken one when ALL of us piled in their bus out of the rain to say good-byes. J

Good times……

Thanks Barlow Family, once again, for your wonderful hospitality! Hopefully we can return the favor sometime soon….

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9

Diggin’ Sweet Potatoes

10:52 am on Monday, November 9, 2009

This year we didn’t reap as many sweet potatoes as years past. It was mainly due to the very wet season we had.

Goulash of Pictures…

6:12 am on Thursday, November 5, 2009

….from the rest of the weekend.

So while we girls were upstairs playing ping-pong, the guys pooled their strength to…..

….finish knocking a hole in our basement wall.

Sledge-hammer time. I’m not positive who was actually whacking it when success was granted, but I’m sure it was a sight to see.

Saturday night after enjoying warm soup for supper…..

….various activities went on.

Some music time.

The off-beat rhythm keeper. J Cutie.

Later on the little boys built us a bon-fire so we could…..

…..sing songs and…..

…..toast marshmallows. I must regretfully say that for the rest of the evening cameras were forgotten as Songs were sung in the basement, Air bench contests done in the dark against the basement walls, Virginia Reels danced in the dining room and kitchen, and movie scenes re-enacted until the wee hours of the morning. Much fun I tell ya!

Sunday afternoon ping-pong tournaments.

Balcony seating. J

The father’s time.

It was hilarious to watch people who were watching the game as their heads went back and forth with the ball. LOL!

Borrowing big brother’s crocs.

Before lunch a couple games of Greek dodge ball were played. Thankfully the sun was out that day which made it a little more bearable to be outside.

It looks like their waiting for something…..

….Grace and Daisy’s famous chocolate chip cookies! No one can make them the same way they do. And that’s a fact. LOL!

Again, thanks Roberts Fam for the encouraging weekend! Y’all come back, ya hear….maybe be then we’ll have actual rooms for y’all to stay in. J

S&R Shirts

6:07 am on Thursday, November 5, 2009

Bekah worked hard and made all these shirts for us girls. So we took our pictures in them.

Some “dude” kept watching us from the water…….. J

If our smiles appear a little fake….

…..it’s because we were extremely cold!

All of our nicknames.

The renown Oreo and Biscuit.

Junior, Bob and Soup.

Jesse James & Billy the Kid (I know, we look so dangerous J).

We come inside and resort to ping pong to warm up.

A roaring fire going in that would have been much appreciated that weekend.

You Know You Have Dear Friends When They….

6:02 am on Thursday, November 5, 2009

  • travel 4 hours in the car to come visit you for the weekend
  • stay with you in your barn
  • sleep in tents that were only meant to hold half the amount of people
  • come on the coldest weekend of the year thus far (got down in the lower 30′s at night) and stay even though we have no central heat
  • share winter clothes with you because what they brought with them is more than we have, and we’re at home! J (All our winter belongings are in storage)
  • help cut a 3′x2′ hole in your 6in thick concrete basement wall
  • join in the fun and have a blast together all weekend…etc…etc……

Welcome back Roberts Fam!

Friday night pow-wow of cards and concentration. This was our circle (plus the photographer).

Saturday morning we got all wrapped up for a hike to the top of the the big hill. Brrr….

The mothers opted to stay inside with the little ones.

Braids become you, my dear.

Making preparations by cutting walking sticks.

A questioning look from Nehemiah.

Finally, off we go!

Playing a live game of “Guess Who?”

“I wanna play too!”

Stopped in the garden.

Daddy.

Farm boy.

Blue skies shone forth very few times that day.

Now our “path” veered off into the woods.

Crossin’ the crick.

Norma and her much envied hat.

Walking sticks come in handy in many circumstances.

My gallant brother.

“Girls, that’s a long way up!”

We form a mile long line as we make our ascent. J

Smiles of triumph at the summit.

Willie climbed to the top of a tree and took some pictures of the house.

The field you see on the left is where the bees are and broilers.

” ‘Ello “

Doesn’t Dais look like a movie star/I’m just her wanna-be, popping in for a picture!  The infamous biscuit and oreo pair!!! We are so happy to have made it on the blog of the century… WOOOO HOOOOO!!! ~ Comment by~ Grace

Sanely Silly

Creepy Crazy

Buddies.

Acorn wars on top the mount’ ensued until too many black-eyes and numb fingers decided the fun was over. J

Here’s a question to ponder: Which is harder, the climb up or the tumbling and sliding down?

Lightening stricken tree.

A momentous occasion…..

…..the first card games played in the girl’s room. Hopefully just the beginning of wonderful memories to be made in that room.

Down below ping-pong games are in full swing. (I know, I’m bad. J)

Probably every version of Nertz invented and then some were played that afternoon. LOL!

Bird’s-eye view.

“C’mon….where’d the chips go?”

A Hole In the Wall…

7:22 pm on Wednesday, November 4, 2009

…a 6inch thick concrete wall, that is.

Stripping away the appropriate amount of foam.

A great team.

Ethan.

Momma marking the lines where to cut.

Our very own “crew”.

Smiles all around.

The demolition saw.

Making the first cut.

The saw is very heavy so you have to trade out to rest your arms.

A little deeper.

Very dusty.

Ethan stood by with water in a squirt bottle to cool the blade.

Does anybody (who doesn’t already know) have any guesses why we need a 2′x3′ hole in our basement wall?

Esther

12:32 pm on Tuesday, November 3, 2009

When Alan and Katie were here this past weekend, we took a walk around outside and I snapped a few pictures of Esther (5 months). She’s got the biggest brown eyes and I couldn’t resist posting a few for y’all to enjoy. Babies are so much fun to photograph!

Grace snapped this one while I was holding her.

My favorite shot of the day! Which is yours?
